From my point of view it is important to get to know the personality of the person I am painting. While I'm taking many photos of the person, I will set up different poses and together we will decide which is best. I will make several sketches trying different poses. We will discuss everything about the portrait: clothing, setting, size, cost (if it varies from the above standard) and whether it will be a sitting or mainly from the photos and the time line. Oils take time to dry, and I paint in stages, letting the paint set up a little before proceeding. All in all, it may take 2 months to finish. Be sure to plan far enough ahead for this time line.

My portraits are painted on stretched linen or fine cotton canvas. I use Graham or Gamblin oil paints. They are excellent products with fine, light fast colors. I glaze the canvas first before drawing the head or figure, then lay in the local colors of the skin. I let it set up a bit, then proceed to build layer upon layer. I will call you to set up a preview before the final finishing is done. I make sure you are happy with the product before the finishing touches.

I also draw in transparent oxide red and do a complete study in values before the use of local color.
